GREAT MOVIE MOMENTS - “Play the five tones.”

Now if by great movie moments we mean “the single scene from a film that has had the biggest impact on my life, that has most affected the way I look at the world and comprehend the universe, that is most deeply embedded in my subconscious”

Then well… obvious choice is obvious.

Think about what is happening  in this scene, two civilizations, as different as civilizations can be, that literally know nothing about each other apart from the fact that the other side is clearly intelligent, are meeting for the first time. they have, apparently nothing in common, hailing from literally opposite sides from the universe. How will they communicate? Through MUSIC. It is because of this scene that I believe that music is literally central to civilization. Take away music and civilization is impossible. The scene posits that music is so fundamental to intelligent life that it would be the one thing that would allow the most disparate civilizations, separated by galaxies, to communicate with each other.

So here is the “conversation” scene from Steven Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind. In the clip above the scene runs from the 4 minute mark to roughly the 8 and a half minute mark.
